PART 1: Design for theatre

Hull In Bloom

GROW

Hull Truck Theatre

In the summer of 2015, I was asked to re-imagine the foyer of Hull Truck theatre for their annual GROW festival launch.

The brief was Glastonbury meets sunday picnic in the park. The space was awkward, big, bright and noisy, and the budget tight, so I had to come up with a way to facilitate the environment.

I scavenged through the props warehouse to see what I could bring back to life, while making giant tissue paper flowers to match up to the space. Credit goes to my friend and set designer Rosalind Wilson for helping me create it.

The shapeshifting set. During my time at Warwick, we had the privilege of taking our show Wasterwater to both Edinburgh Fringe and NSDF in Scarborough. The brief was nightmare worthy; "We need to change these three rooms into a garden, a hotel room, a warehouse, and we need them to change, and we need to be in and out in 5 minutes and have no storage"

Ok.

I rummaged to the depths of my imagination to conjure up a plan. Where the idea of old school (literally) over head projectors came from, I'm not sure. However they became a character themselves. They provided light, atmosphere, image, texture and we could change them round in 5 minutes.

The effectiveness proved very successful, winning our team the design award at the National Student Drama Festival!
